The following websites offer resources to assist students enhance their study and test-taking strategies as well as their success in specific subject areas:
Study Strategies:
- Lucy MacDonald has it all on howtostudy.org ! Easy access for support in various subjects from Accounting to Theatre as well as effective study, memory, and writing strategies and help for test anxiety.
- McMaster University presents Academic Skills Videos which students can easily relate to on topics such as improving memory, time management, note-taking, motivation and procrastination, math, writing, and transforming grades from B’s to A’s.
- The Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) at the University of Central Florida shares useful handouts on study strategies, reading techniques, vocabulary building, self-diagnostic tests, gpa calculating, and a whole lot more!
- Joe Landsberger’s site, Study Guides and Strategies, offers students numerous tips and examples on organization and preparation for studying, test taking, and researching for projects or presentations! This site also offers effective ways to work in groups as well as resources for several specific subject areas, including writing, math, science, and spelling.
- California Polytechnic State University provides students with several types of notetaking methods: Cornell Method, Outline Method, Mapping Method, Charting Method, and Sentence Method.
- The Cook Counseling Center of Virginia Tech offers Study Skills Self Help Information and gives students access to several online study skills workshops which present strategies for time management, test performance, reading comprehension, concentration, and memory.
Time Management:
- A common statement of college students is, “I don’t know where the time has gone!” In the same way that your dollars can be eaten up by inflation, your time can disappear by a lack of time management. In order to increase your achievement, you must control your time or it will control you. To assess where your time goes and how much time you actually have left for studying, take this inventory created by the Cook Counseling Center of Virginia Tech!

Cleveland State University’s Writing Center offers writing resources on topics ranging from brainstorming, grammar, paragraph unity and thesis statements to APA and MLA documentation.

Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) gives students access to popular sites for correct MLA and APA format, proper development of a thesis statement, tips for business letter and resume writing, and information about how to avoid plagiarism.

The Writing Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers handouts with helpful tips on writing topics including pages dedicated to audience, paragraph development, transitions, editing and proofreading.

English Plus offers Grammar Slammer, a solution for all grammar woes! This site is loaded with useful resources for a number of grammar topics, including punctuation, capitalization, style and usage, as well as a list of common mistakes and choices and how to prevent them.
